The next step was to get a trailor with brakes from Te Awamutu, capable of handling towing a 300ZX from Auckland to Te Awamutu. Cost of this for the day was $80.33. Unbeknownst to us, the brakes on the trailor were faulty and did not work at all. We however set off on our merry way to Auckland in the pissing rain to collect the old girl with the burnt out engine. We arrived in Auckland in the early afternoon, still in the pissing rain, and began to load the dead 300 onto the trailor. Using the load strops we tied the car down as tight as we could to the trailor, and set off, saturated, back to Hamilton. There was lots of ‘slidey-slidey’ action as the brakes on the VS Commodore struggled with the weight of the Z plus trailor pushing it from the rear. Needless to say, our speed rarely rose above 60 at any point from Auckland to Hamilton. Razorback Ridge, and the Bombays were certainly fun to navigate down with twice the cars in the wet.
Someone was certainly watching out for us, as we made it back to Hamilton all in one piece, including the cars. Stopping at BP Melville, a mechanic friend of mine advised me to look at the front of the Commodore. The front of the Commodore was right up, with wheels barely touching the ground, but even with this, all was safe and well, and hell, we were almost home free!
Off we set towards Glen’s house in Te Awamutu (an offline member of the 300ZX forums, and indeed an invaluable asset to the club). We dumped the car at Glen’s, and headed home for Hamilton after a large days work.
